“I think you can expect some time next year to have rendering capabilities on mobile devices superior to the Xbox 360,” said Michael Schade, CEO of mobile games developer Fishlabs, at a mobile conference in Brighton, as reported by CVG.

Interesting notion, Mike, and not one I find particularly unbelievable considering current handhelds like the PSP and DS and even the iPad and phones are on average only about a generation behind. But then he said this (after the jump):

“When we have made it so that someone buys a mobile device to play a game, then the mobile has become a more important platform than consoles,” he added, saying that the smaller screen size wasn’t a major issue.

Erm, OK, Mike, that’s where you’re wrong. Being able to play games in a physical communal setting will always be important. Yeah, you’d be able to play Call of Duty on an iPad, but nobody who has ever played Call of Duty on a TV, which is pretty much everyone who has ever played Call of Duty, will want to make the leap. Now, having this ability might destroy the DS and PSP, but it won’t make the iPad compete directly with home consoles, because home consoles and handheld consoles are not direct competitors just as television and movies are not direct competitors aside from both being entertainment media vying for your money.

What did we learn here? That maybe people who don’t know about this kind of corporate strategy should not speculate on it. Move along now.
